Imagine for a moment that a poisonous substance somehow got into 74% of the processed food in your local supermarket. Eat too much of this toxic substance and you’re headed for a life filled with hypertension, diabetes, fatty liver disease, heart disease, cancer, and dementia.
You do some research and find out a few startling things:
- There are no limits to the amount manufacturers can put into food.
- To hide the fact that it’s in your food, manufacturers are legally allowed to use 56 different names to describe it.
- Plus, there are lobbyists working to convince people that this poisonous substance is 100% safe.
And if that’s not bad enough, you LOVE how this poisonous substance tastes. It makes you happy. Once you taste it, you want more, more, more. Sounds pretty bad, right? If you haven’t guessed it yet, I’m talking about sugar.
Robert H. Lustig, MD, Professor of Pediatrics, Division of Endocrinology, UCSF, says over-consumption of sugar is “the biggest epidemic in the history of the world.” He points out that “one-third [!!] of Americans have fatty liver disease,” a disease that wasn’t even described before 1980. According to Craig Wilcox, PhD., “We have never in human history been exposed to the levels of sugar intake that we’re currently exposed to. This has got to have metabolic consequences.” So what about you? Are you consuming too much sugar each day? According to US Government guidelines, men should consume no more than 37.5 g (9 tsp) of sugar per day; women no more than 25g (6 tsp). Do you know how much sugar is in your favorite foods? For example, a Jamba Juice large Banana Berry Smoothie contains 510 calories and 106g of sugar–4 times the daily limit recommended for women. A Yoplait Original Blueberry Yogurt contains 27g of sugar. Honey Nut Cheerios has 9g of sugar–BUT the serving size is only 29g. A typical bowl of cereal is about 100g. So you would really have 33g of sugar–and that’s without adding milk.
You can see how easy it is to over-consume sugar. What can you do? Start paying attention! That’s the bottom line. If you don’t, you are headed toward the chronic conditions which will eventually leave you riddled with diseases. Pay attention, read Nutrition Facts, and do a little math.
